The Auckland Evening Star, 2nd December, says : The Rev. Mr Bruce, at the close of the morning service yesterday, in St Andrew's Church, said that he had received a communication from the Rev. Mr. Barclay, of Napier, who is now in the old country in the capacity of Emigration Agent, that a number of benevolent ladies had agreed to send out contributions to the value of ,£3OO in aid of poor country emigre gations for the erection and repair of manses. A circular was also distributed among the congregation intimating that a bazaar would shortly be held in aid of the Auckland Home Mission Fund. A distinguished engineer, who is connected with some of the most honorable families in Italy, has just been arrested at Florence, charged -villi attempting murder on a wholesale scale. Tt appears he was involved in financial troubles, and, with a view to extricate himself by means of the properly of his friends, which he expected to inherit, the wretched man tried to poison by morphine, uo fewer than eighteen individuals, among whom were his father, brother, wiie, and his own children.
