Great dissatisfaction is expressed here at the action of the Seamen's Mutual Benefit Society in dictating that the wages of seamen engage*! in the home trade shall be .£lO per month, and £5 per month for coasting. Many seamen employed on board vessels in the latter trade are deserting in consequence.
DUNEDIN. Friday, Dec. 6. The opening of a new gold ground at the Rock and Pillar, near Hyde, has caused a rush to set in. Shearers and other laborers are deserting the stations to go the diggings. The men working on the new field are said to be getting £2 per day. Commercial. — Flour, .£l4; wheat (scarce), 5s 9d; oats, 2s 2d; barley, none.
PORT CHALMERS.
Friday, Dec. 6. Shipping.—The ship Christian M'Ausland has arrived from Glasgow. She brings 290 passengers. Five infants died on the voyage There being one case of scarlatina on board on arrival in port, the ship lias been placed in quarantine.
