Hawke's Bay Times. Nullius addictus jurare in verba magistri. WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 1872.
Jn the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning, one offender against the laws of sobriety was fined five shillings. Hooping-cough, we aro informed, prevails to a great extent among the children of the Scandinavians at Norsewood, Seventy-mile Bush. The immigrants there arc described as cheerful and industrious, but they are placed at a great disadvantage by the excessive price of provisions. Most of those who have been accustomed to the use of the necessary tools, have by this time comfortable habitations, but the houses of others (brought up, perhaps, as tailors or shoemakers), are sadly defective, and anything but weathei -proof. It is notified for general information, that by "The Stamp Duties Act Amendment Act, 1872," the stamp duty payable on cheques, drafts and receipts is reduced from twopence to one penny, on and from the Ist Doc., 1872. 1. Persons holding adhesive stamps of the value of twopence may, by requisition on the Stamp Office of the Province, or on any Depository of Stamps, exchange the same for an equivalent value of adhesive stamps at one penny, oi any other denomination. 2. Persons holding .stamps at twopence, impressed on blank forms of cheques, drafts, or receipts, may exchange the same in like manner for adhesive stamps or other denominations. But no ex changes of stamps at twopence, im pressed on blank foims of cheques or drafts, will he made after the cOth November instant, except at the reduced value of one penny. A General Government Gazette, issued on the 31st Oct., notiiies the appointments respectively-of the Hon. Mr O'Borke to be Secretary for Crown Lands and Minister for Immigration ; the Hon. Mr Reynolds to be Commissioner of Stamps ; the Hon. Mr Bathgate to be Minister of Justice and Commissioner of Customs ; the Hon. Mi Richardson to be Minister for Public Works, vice Mr Ormond ; and the Hon. Mr O'Rorke to be a Land Claims Commissioner, under "The Lands Claims Settlement Act, 1856," and " The Land Claims Settlement Extension Act, 1858." The New Zealand Herald, of 31st October, gives the following particulars of an extraordinary and fatal case of lock-jaw :—We regret to have to record the death last evening, fioni lock-jaw, of Geoige Seymour, aged 20, at the residence (in Albert-street) ol his father, Captain Seymour of the cutter Alarm, aucler very distressing circumstances. The following are the particulars of the sad occurrence :- It appears that some ten days ago the deceased was engaged stock-driving, at Mangawai, when he accidentally struck himself with the lash of his whip just over the left eye. He took no notice of this rime, —in fact the " Hick" hardly left a mark. A day or two afterwards he came to town, when the wound got much worse; and on Tuesday morning it was thought advisable to send for Dr Hooper, who at once saw that all the symptoms of tetanus had set in. Shortly afterwards, the young man's jaw set as firm as a vice j and in this condition he remained until six o'clock last evening, when, despite everything that could be done to alleviato him, death put an end to his sufferings. The deceased was a line young man, well-heloved by all who knew him. We ha\e not learned whether an inquest will be held upon the body. The total amount of gold exported from this colony up to September 30th, 1872, is valued at £25,852,477.
