Hawke's Bay Times. Nullius addictus jurare in verba magistri. THURSDAY, OCTOBER 17, 1872.

We have been requested to announce that the Bev. H. B. Redstone, of Na pier, will conduct Divine service on Sunday next, Oct. 20, as follows : At Waipawa (in the new church), at 11 a.m. and 6.30 p.m.; and at Waipukurau at 3 p.m. At the close of each service at "Waipawa a collection will be made in aid of the Building Fund. Mails for the Australian Colonies, and for the United Kingdom and Continent of Europe, via Suez, will at Auckland at noon tomorrow (Friday, 18th inst.) What may bo termed "Vogeli-m" •would not appear to be confined to New Zealand. We find that statistics have been compiled, from which it ap pears that during the first four months of 1872 the amount of money sought to })<s raised for new loans, banks, and industrial undertakings, brought out of England, America, and on the Continent, was about £160,000,000. Something still remains to be done in order to convince our native friends of the futility of their opposition to the progress of civilization. Their claim to all the birds of the air, all the fish in New Zealand rivers, and also to exemption from the operation of outlaws, is shown by the following translation of a notice sent to the Government by the natives at Arowhenua ; *'lt is the intention of the Runanga of Arowhenua to let the Government know their wishes respecting these birds :—The paradise ducks, grey ducks, teal, plover, and other water fowl; pigeons, mountain parrots, kakas, wekas, and other- birds. Let not these birds be protected; let no laws be passed about these birds. These birds are ours. And the rivers—do not, ye "white people place lish in these waters between Waitaki and Lake Ellesmeve : in none of these waters place fish. Do not, oh white people, thoughtlessly place your fish in these streams, because it is from the native lards and fish we get most of our food. This is what we vont you to know. But another matter -vye want to make known is the im- | pending of horses, and dog collars I

(tax) : these laws are obnoxious to us. We Maories ought to be protected from the operation of these laws." Bot h yesterday and to day, the weather has been exceedingly warm,. A fresh N-W. "breeze has prevailed, and the clouds of dust has rendered it very disagreeable to (hose who have been obliged to be much out of doors. At 9 o'clock this morning, the thermometer registered 67 degrees in the fchade—being higher than in any other part of New Zealand.—Just before we went to press the wind fell light and veered to the southward; a drizzling rain also set in. The steamer Nevada, from Auckland, and the steamer Hangatira, from Wei lington, were both to have to have left for Napier this afternoon at 4 o'clock.
