Hawke's Bay Times. TUESDAY, OCTOBER 15, 1872.
"Mr Colenso," .says our evening contemporary, "announced himself last Saturday 10 be an advocate of the Education tax." Mr Colenso made no such announcement in his address, and nothing of the kind appears in either of the published reports, or in the burlesque in Saturday night's Telegraph. The Telegraph's article last night is therefore founded on a fiction, pure and simple. Mr Colenso is wellknown as the most consistent and determined opponent of the rate, and, what is more, almost the only person who drew public attention to those sources of revenue, at preseut out of the control of the Province, which would more than supply the place of the rate if it were abolished. Mr. Colenso's passing allusion to his opposition to the tax was certainly contradicted by Mr Sutton ; but that gentleman must have spoken on the authoiity of a very treacherous memory. There ore few other Napier electors, we imagine, whose recollection does not carry them back to the time that, rate was discussed in the Council, and to Mr Colenso's energetic and consistent opposition to its imposition; or who Will not remember that he resisted it to the last as illegal, and would have tested jte legality in the Resident Magistrate's (Spurt had a sufficient number of his ooustituents consented to support him m m doing,
A "singular story," from the San Francisco Bulletin, appears in auother column. It possesses a curious interest here; but reminding our readers that it comes from California, where the proverbial "longbow" is systematically drawn to a tensiou unequalled elsewhere, we would recommend them to receive it cum grano salis. The brigantine Esther, as she now lies stranded on the Beacon reef, together with masts, sails, rigging, anchors, &c, was submitted to public competition this forenoon by Messrs. Routledge, Kennedy & Co., at their scores, Port Ahuriri, and knocked down for the sum of £122. The hull, with masts, anchors, &c, fetched ,£BO, Mr. R. Burrows being the purchaser; the sails and rigging were purchased by Messrs. Days & Bristow for £35 ; and the boat and oars by Messrs. Kinross & Co. for £7 ; total, ,£122. As the Californian mail steamer is something over a week behind her due date, we may now, we suppose, be justified in daily expecting to hear of her arrival at Auckland. In the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning there were two civil cases. M'Hugh v. Antony.—Claim of £32 2s goods delivered. Adjourned to Friday. Tiiien v. Hallassey.—Adjourned case. Claim of £37 Is rent, &c., set-off tiled, £lB 13s labor, *fec. Mr Lee for plaintiff: Mr Lascelles for defendant. Items in both account and setoff were disputed.—- Decision reserved till 3 p.m. From an announcement in another column, signed by the Returning Olhcer, it will be seen that the declaration of the poll in the forthcoming election takes place at noon on Friday next, 18th insc.
