In the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning two drunkards were lined 5s each. Budget Giaharu was charged by John Carey with using insulting and abusive language to him in Shak-speare-road on the 9th inst. A number of witnesses were called on both sides, and the charge was fully sustained. The parties were quarrelsome neighbors, and have several times been before the Court in similar cases. Some of the language repeated by the witnesses was exceedingly gross, and was not denied on the other'side. Lt was asserted by the complainant and others that the defendant had been drinking; but the principal witness for the defence attri buted her abusive conduct to provocation on the part of the complainant, and partly to the tact that she was suffering from corns. Th;» defendant, she testified, was " drunk with her corns,'' but not with liquor —she

" never saw the sign of liquor upon her." The defendant did not dispute the charge, but pleaded provocation, which she failed to make out. The objectionable language, il appeared, was used in the hearing of all the girls of St. Mary's school, who had been dismissed at the time.—Ordered to find two sureties*, £lO each, to be of good behaviour for one month. Costs of case, 15s. The nomination of candidates for the vacant seat for the district of Napier Town, lately occupied by Mr Colenso, is fixed for to-morrow, at noon, at the Resident Magistrate's Court-house. From an advertisement in another column it will be seen that the new Methodist Church at Waipawa is to be opened on Sunday next, the Rev. Mr Sidey preaching the opening sermon. The public tea meeting is fixed for Tuesday next, when we hope there will be a good attendance. As we went to press this evening we received from our agent a telegraphic summary of Mr AVaterhouse's statement, which we must hold over.
