Hawke's Bay Times. Nullius addictus jurare in verba magistri. THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 1872.

Mails for Australia and the tlnited Kingdom close at. the BlufT at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Although the, two vessels are not by any means fairly matched, it £$ probable that a trial of speed is at this moment taking plaoe between the mail steamer Nebraska and the s.s. Rangatira, both of which left Port Ahuriri this afternoon within 15 ve minutes,of each other, bound for Wellington. Before she had rounded Ahuriri Bluff, it was observed that the Rangatira was spreading her canvas to the favoring breeze, Capt. Renner being evidently bent ou achieving a victory, if possible, over the Yankee Leviathan.

The Hawke's Bay portion of ihe English mail via San Francisco came to hand this morning, per Nebraska, from Auckland. Extracts from the papers appear elsewhere. J. D. Ormond, Esq., was a passenger by the Nebraska for Welling ion this afternoon.

The competition for the Napier Rifle Volunteer challenge belt took place on the beach range yesterday and this mornings.
