MISSION SCHOONER SOUTHERN CROSS.
(From the New Zealand Herald, August 5 ) Dr Cowie stated in the course of his sermon, delivered in St. Paul's Chinch yesteiday evening, tl at some anxiety wasi'elt regarding '..hesafety of the Mission schooner Southern Cross, which vessel, according to his Lordship, was by latest account five weeks overdue at. Norfolk Island. He also informed the congregation that a meeting of the friends of the Mission had been held on Saturday, at which it had been determined to despatch a vessel to Norfolk Island, vvith orders, in case of there being no word of the schooner, to proceed on to the Mission stations on the Islands, and pick up the missionaries who had been left behind, and that one of our local clergy would accompany the vessel Previous to the sailing of the schooner we understood from the head of the party that the vessel was to call at Levuka during the month oi June. Our advices from that port only bring us up to June 20th, ho that it is possible the next Fiji trader may bring us intelligence of the Melanesian Mission party. From our Australian telegrams of this morning it would seem that troubles have occurred at the Solomon Islands, and this again, as well as calms or unfavorable " trades " may have contributed to delay the Southern Cross.
