'.During the six months ending 30th June, 1872, about 20,000 sheep and 1,000 head cattle were imported into Auckland from the other Provinces of iSFew Zealand. It may interest our readers to know ibafc the exports from Port Ahuriri to Auckland during the like period comprised 12,190 sheep and 518 head of cattle. The live stock export from this port during the month of July, 1872, comprised 56 head cattle and 1,287 sheep. Jn the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning the usual penalty was inflicted on one drunkard. A new tent of the Independent Older of Rechahites- the second in Napier—was opened on Tuesday evening laxt, July 30, by P.C.R. Brother J. Wood of the Hope of Meanee Tent, assisted by Brother J. Harding of the Waipukurau Tent, P.D.C.R. Brother Troy, District Delegate, and other officers and brethren from various Tents. The now Tent was named the ♦'Royal Scinde Island Tent," and is connected with the Ne* Zealand District, No. 84. The following brethren were elected officers : —A. Browne, C.R.; J. W. In our advertising columns will be found a notice respecting the South British Fire and Marine Insurance Company, to which wo direct the particular a Mention of all who are interrated. We understand that this Province has had its interests regarded by the directors, who have allotted to it (provisionally) 1,563 shares; and as we learn that the whole of the shares allotted to Auckland, Wellington, and Dunedin were very quickly taken up, and that far more than the number allotted were applied for, *\e have no doubt that those allotted to this Province will also find ready demand. Such an association has been long required, and we wish it every success A Thames correspondent writes to the Southern Cross : —" It is a long lane without a turning, and i am convinced that the Thames has reached the turning point at last. It ha»> been dull enough here of Inte, goodness knows; but we are going to have a mining revival." The Theatre Royal in Auckland has been converted into a grain store. The writer of " Casual Notes " in the Otago Daily Times says :—lf the Tuapeka Times is correctly informed, a swarm of Chinese, more numerous than any previous one in the hi-tory of the province, is about to invade Otago. It would seem from this as if ''John' were not very much afraid of any steps being taken by the Assembly to tax him heavily, either by imposing a poll tax or a still heavier du r y on rue. The influx will show also that the Chinaman already here have been doing well, despite the long drought. If the new comers are as numerous as it is said they will be, the anti-Chinese agitation, which has been remarkably quiet lately will become as active as ever. The Invasion will not be without its use. however, for it will enable Mr Macandrew, in opening the Provincial Couri'ul next y«at, once moie to point out "a balance in favor of immigration" over emigration. On the other hand, if tin- Chinese continue to increase and the Europeans to decrease, it will befoie long be necessary for the Superintendent's speed) to be published in Chinese as well as in English. The experiments recently made at Baliarat (Victoria) in the manufacture of earthenware and other classes of pottery were so successful that it has been determined to form a company for the establishment ot a pottery. As the clay is not to he found at Baliarat the works will be put up at Melbourne. Odd fellowship has been in existence as an institution for abou' sixty years. The fii--.fc society originated in Manchester in 1812. Freemasonry is about 200 years old. It originated in England in the latter part of the 17th century. The celebrated Elias Ashmoleand a few friends were the real founders. Very little is known of the proceedings of the Society until the establishment in 1717, of the tiist Grand Lodges in London, with power to grant charters to other lodges. The Grand Lodge of Scotland was institute] in 1736. A subject of Queen Victoria enjoys the privilege of allowing his children to grow up in ignorance. To a subject of King Kamehameha V, King of the Sindwich Islands, no such privilege is allowed, lie is fined if he does not send his children to school, and the result in a short time will be, that ignorance of reading and writing may belong to some ot the subjects of Queen Victoria, but not to those of the sable monarch above referred to. One of the most interesting facts in modern astronomy is the discovery, which has resulted from a number of observations made within a lew years, that Sinus, the famous dog-star of the ancients, and known to every amateur astronomer for its Irillianey and beauty, is gradually receding fiom the earth. The rate of its motion through stellar Mpace is estimated by Professor Huggin* at 26 miles per second ! Arly genius is like arly cabbage ; it don't ape tew hed well. . . .
