We have frequently taken occasion to impress upon the minds of our readers the subject of life assurance. We have also directed their attention to the special inducements offered by the Government to assurers, and the important advantages afforded by the Government over either a proprietary or a mutual system. Our remarks, however, have not been exhaustive of the subject, but lather of an introductory character, intended to stimulate individual inquiry into the question. Those whose interest in the subject has been awakened wjll be glad to J earn that an agent of (.he Government (Mr. T. F. M 'Donogh) has at length paid Napier a visit, and will give a lecture em braping the whole question this evening in the Council Chamber. As the subject is one that concerns every individual in thp pommunity, we trust to see a full attendance. No charge for admission •will be made. .Further particulars wjll be found in an acjvertisement in another column. In the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning one drunkard was fined five shillings. A telegraph station has been opened at Motueka, in the Province of Nelson —not at si Matuaka, in the Piovince of Wellington/' as reported yesterday. Mails dose at the Bluff for Australia at 2 p.m. to-morrow. By a tplegvam in our morning contemporary, we observe that the election of a member to represent Nelson city in the House of Representatives has resulted in the return of Mr. I). An inquiry into the origin of the ]ate fire at Timaru ljas resulted in the return of aft open verdict. is reported to be very scarce at CoromandeK especially, are in great request. The late scat city of blading powder at the Thames has led to suggestions being made that that article should be manufactured on the spot.
