The Provincial Council of Canterbury has unanimously passed a resolu lion, requesting the General Governjuent to take earnest steps for the defence of the sea-board of the Province of Canterbury. According to one of the Boss papers, Mr Warden Aylmer has had the title of " Marshal " conferred upon him, aud he now bears the designation of Marshal Aylmer. The following telegram from Nelson ? dated May 17, appears in the Auckland papers :—" Mr Saunders addressed a large meeting last night, and goner ally condemned the borrowing scheme and present expenditure. He declared that strict economy, instead of borrowing, should have been practised after the war. He referred to the heavy debt, increased dining the first year of peace by a new million and a half. He regretted to find his old friend, Mr. Luekie, who formerly worked with him, now no longer opposed to the borrowing plan. He had found no change in Mr Richmond, who was stili the same good man in pir ate life, but bad in public life--one who never saw faults in friends, nor virtues in foes. In his speech he attacked both candidates, censured Vogel, praised Fox and M'Lean, and opposed the policy of the Ministry U**nerally. He adopted .Richmond's role, and condemned the Public Debts Consolidation, which took hundreds of thousands annually out of the pockets of the taxpayers. A vote of thanks was proposed, seconded, and carried with applause."
