LOSS OF THE SCHOONER ARGO, AND SUPPOSED LOSS OF LIFE.
(From the Thames Advertiser, May 17.) By the arrival yesterday of the Prince Rupert, schooner, Benuett. master, from Pakiri, we have information of the loss of the schooner Argo, off Omaha, on the night of the 27th April. The Argo was trading between the Thames and Kawakawa, and left here in ballast., to load coals at that place, on the morning of Saturday, 27th ult. She was last seen off Omaha by the master of the Prince Bupert, which vessel bound from Auckland to Pakiri; but, owing to the threatening stale of the weather, ran into Omaha for shelter. The same night a heavy gale sprang up, and, from what has since transpired, there is very little doubt the Argo came to giief, with all hands, before she could reach a safe anchorage. The master of Prince Bupert formerly sailed in the Argo, and before lea\ing Pakiri on Sunday last found two canvas covers, which he recognised as belonging to the Argo's companion, and a tub, leaving very little doubt as to the iale of the vessel and crew. The. Argo was a handsome little craft of 33 tons register, built by Mr Meiklejohn, of Omaha, and was valued at ,£I,OOO. She was for some time in the Island trade, but more continuously in the Wangarei and Bay of Ls lands trade. She was partly owned l>y the master, a foreigner, named J. Souze, and we believe by Mr Shirley W. Hill, of Auckland. * The seamen on board at the time the schooner left the Thames were James Brown and Joseph Simpson.
