Cargo ;" 310 sacks oats, 20 sacks grass seed, 5£ cwt. cheese, 10 cases salmon, Stuart & Co. The s.s. Star of the South, Capt. Holmes, arrived in port at 8 o'clock this morning, bad weather having prevented her prosecutiug her voyage. She left Port Ahuriri on the afternoon of Wednesday lust, 24th inst., with the wind from N.E., fresh. Portland Island was passed at 1 a.m., and at 3 am. the wind and sea had risen to such a pitch that it was considered prudent to seek shelter. The steamer was accordingly put about, and at daylight she dropped anehor at the Mahia Peninsula. 'Unfavorable weather continuing, the Star left for Napier at 12 o'clock last evening, arriving here as above. No sheep or cattle were lost. The sheep, but not the cuttle, were landed this morning. A fresh lot will be shipped to-morrow morning, and the stetmer leave for the Thames and Auckland at 10 a.m. Another vessel, is missing. The Alice, a small fore-and-aft schooner, " nearly as broad as she is long," left Dunedin on the sth of last month, for Charleston, on the West Coast, and has not been seen or heard of since. Crave fears arc consequently entertained for her safety.
