We learn that the firing for the Napier Rifle Club Silver Challenge Cup will take place on the 14th February.
The firing of company representatives for the honor of representing this Province at the Colonial Prize Firing at Chris-tchurch will, we believe, come off on Tuesday morning next, 23rd inst. The steamer Keera, for Poverty Bay, Tauranga, and Auckland, has been de tained until 9 o'clock to-night. The Rev. H. B. Redstone will (D.V.) conduct Divine service on Sunday next, 21st as follows : —ln the morning at Waipukurau, in the afternoon at Waipawa, and in the evening at Kaikora. The service at each place to commence at the usual time.
The Rev. R. Taylor will (D.V) conduct Divine Service on Sunday next, 21st inst., as follows :—ln the morning at Napier, in the afternoon at West Clive, and in tlie evening at Napier. The Rev. G. Morice will (D.V.) hold Divine service in the Meanee church on Sunday next, 21st inst., at 3 p.m. We learn that a shark, measuripg about 12 feet in length, was caught in the inner harbor this morning. The new steam launch will probably be launched about noon to-morrow. Steam was got up in twenty minutes this morning.
A pair of Australian Cape Barren geese have been presented to the Canterbury Acclimatization Society, by Mr G. Gould. The Cbristchurch papers say that the birds are quite an ornamental attraction in the new waterfowl enclosure, and will doubtless prove a valuable acquisition to the wild fowl list. According to the Evening Post, it is reported in Wellington that previous to his execution Kereopa made a long statement, which was telegraphed to Mr M'Lean. It has not been made public as yet. The Astronomical Society of Christchurch is placing itself in communication with Professor Airey, the Astronomer Royal, with a view to obtaing information as to the mode of procedure in establishing an observatory. The Auckland Rowing Club has hit upon a brief definition of that vexed question among boating men in this Colony tp what is an " amateur." According to the A.R C.'s rule *•' anyone is an amateur who does not earn his living by plying for hire with a pair' of sculls,"
