The B.s. Napier, from Mahia, may now be hourly expected to put in an appearance.
The brig Venus is rapidly filling up with wool, and it is anticipated that by the end of the month she will be a full ship. We are glad to observe that steps are about to be taken to secure regular religious services in the Port school-room every Sabbath day. All those interested in (he matter would do well to attend the meeting convened for this evening, at half-past 7 o'clock, to be held in the Poit school-room.
In view of the approaching competition for district representatives at the Colonial Prize Firing for 1872, to take place in Christen urch, the tiring for choice of company representatives for the Napier Riiie Volunteers took place on the mornings of Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday last. The ranges each day were 400, 500, and 600 yards, five shots at each range—4-5 .shots per man in all. The Rifles being entitled to five company representativ es, we append the names, with total scores, of the sue cessful competitors : —Corporal Renouf, 135; Volunteer Moore, 123; Ensign Close, 120; Volunteer Stubbs, 120; and Corporal Morrison, 117.—A silver cup, the gift of Capt. Robinson, was won by Corporal Renouf, it having been arranged that the highest aggregate scorer during the three days' company representative firing should be the dinner.
We observe in our local contemporaries a long and important telegram relating to public works, which we are told has been " telegraphed free to the press of the Colony." We have to complain that no such telegram has been recplved at this office, and we hope the matter will be looked into, and that it will be ascertained to whose neglect this omission is due.
From advertisements in the Auckland paper.-, w« learn that Bay of islands coal is being sold on board a hulk in the harbor at 20s per ton, find that when the railway is finished the price will be still further reduced.
As an instance of what ihe Empire City loses through not having proper accommodation, the Evening Post mentions that the Italian Opera Company, now in Auckland, is going to play in Wellington one night, and in Christchurch two weelcs.
The erection of a Boys' Reformatory in Christenurch has been commenced. A Bluff telegram, of date December 13, records the following singular case : -_- OCT- — Hugh Blackmore, the shepherd, who was reported to be missing on the 27th ulb., and to have committed suicide, bub who was afterwards found to have returned home, really committed suicide to-day, cutting bis throat with a butcher's knife in the stables of the Eaoile Hotel.
