Hawke's Bay Times. Nullius addictus jurare in verba magistri. WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 20, 1871.
-The C Q. p.s. Luna has bi ought us news of fires both Kortb and Soi'th — in Auckland and in Wellington. Some at least of those in Auckland appear to be the work of incendiaries, so at least has been the decision of a coroner's jury. It is hard to appreciate the infatuated stupidity of the incendiary ■who. believes that he is making it ffgoocl for trade" by the wanton destruptipn of property; and equally hard to understand the obliquity of his moral state who pan deliberately initiate the destruction of propei-ty, the pnd or extent of which no one can foresee. Fires, when the rpsnlt of pure accident, are awful enough to contemplate, but when they are the result of deliberate intention there is fjje additional element introduced of biiraan. crime. "We observe that the
police force of Auckland * s to be in creased in the hope by increased vigilance to prevent the repetition of the crime; and we trust that the parties guilty of the late fire may be detected and brought to punishment.
