4 LEGEND OF THE SWALLOW. Swallows iiwitter, twitter softly, Underneath the dark old eayes; Weary pass the reapers homeward; Counted are the golden sheaves. Through the twitter of the swallow • ]. can hear a legend old Of the time when pur great Shepherd Died, to bring us to His fold. Quickly falls the Eastern evening— Shadows of great crosses three Lengthen to the dusky valley Down the hill of Calvary. To ot?e across there comes a swallow, Peers all sorrowfully down, Pitying the Saviour's patience, Wondering at his thorny crown. " Jlugswala, swala, swala honom ! " * Such the swallow's yearning cry; So it aye is called the swala, Since that day of misery. They took the cross, but the swallow still Fluttered and o'er the place, Ever longing again to find That suffering weary Face. To our eyes may He be present, Wheu " the shadows flee away," And that patient Face shall show us Light " unto the perfect day." Swallows twitter, twitter softly, Swiftly fall the autumn leaves; When to eartli our Lord returneth, Rest we 'mid His golden sheaves. * Swedish—" 0 .console, console, console Him."
