Our Auckland letter, received per Star p{ the South, is held over. Mails for Auckland and the Thames, per Star of the South, close to-morrow at half-past 12 o'clock. "We uuders'and that it is probable that the horsewhipping case, which we mentioned yesterday, will come before the Resident Magistrate to-morrow. There were no cases at the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning, A parade of the Volunteer Cadets took place at the rear of the Masonic Hall yesterday afternoon. There was a fair muster, and the several movements in which they were exercised were gone through in a creditable manner. We are glad to hear that a drum and fife ])and, in connection with this company, js in process of formation. The steamer Taranaki, on a recent trip, made the run from Lyttelton to Wellington in 14 hours, being an average of 13 knots an hour. " One Interested" writes us as follows :-rr " Attention is directed to the fact that a brown dog, with cropped ears and a short tail—-the property, it is said, of a person residing not a hundred miles from the Port Church —is continually prowling about, and is a dangerous nuisance ; and ought certainly to be kept chained up, especially at night. * Prevention is better than cure/ " In the New Zealand Gazette of the 27th July we observe a notification that the building situated on section 105, Waghorn-street, Port Ahuriri, known as " Robjohn's Bond," has been approved and appointed by the Commissioner of Customs to be a warehouse for the reception of goods in bond. We also notice the following list of additional post offices in this Colony:—Auckland Bombay, Ohaupo, Te Ana; Taranaki —Bell Block, Hawera, Okato ; Hawke's Bay—Tahoraiti; Wellington—Nukumaru; Nelson— Beeftou, The following post offices have been closed : Auckland —~ Razorback, Williamson's Clearing, Mangarei West; Otago—Centre Hill. Mr F. Elm branch has been appointed Postmaster at Tahoraiti, and Mr Walter Black Postmaster at Mahia in this Province, the former appointmsnt taking effect from the Ist July, and the latter from the Ist June.
Two notices to mariners are published in the New Zealand Gazette of the 27th ult. The first cautions masters of vessels going to or from the steam wharf, Lyttelton, to avoid passing inside—or to the northward-—rof the mooring buoys placed off the screw pile jetty, to prevent their fouling vessel's chains with the screw. The second is as follows :—*" Sydney, 12th June, 1871. —Captain Grainger, of the A. and C. mail steamer " City of Melbourne," reports the existence of an Island not laid down in the Admiralty Charts, situated in latitude 11° 34' S., longitude 165° 26' W. It is described as being 100 feet high, nearly round, and 2 miles, in diamter; and it has breakers extending \ mile from its southern extreme. Captain Grainger also reports passing over the position, without seeing any indication from the mast-head, of an Island placed on the Chart in latitude 11° 52' S.-, longitude 165° or W."
