The anniversary ball of the Napier Rifle Volunteers, which came oft* in the Oddfellows' Hall last night, was a complete success. The hall was beautifully decorated, and was the theme of universal admiratioja. There were present between 15 and 80 couples. Dancing commenced about 9 pm., and was sustained with gieat spirit until shortly after 5 o'clock this morning,—the playing of the Rifle Band being, as usual, much admired, We have only further to add that the shipper was served up in Mr Johnson's well-known style; and that throughout the night the stewards exerted themselves with a will to make all present as comfortable as possible. The usual monthly inspection parade of the Napier Volunteer Artillery took place in Clive Square yesterday afternoon, and was, we believe, well attended. The men were put through a portion of the new skirmishing drill by Major Withers, A serious accident happened to Mr Elmslie, second officer of the ship Helenslee, at Lyttelton, on the 24th July. He was employed aloft on the maintop, from whence he fell on to the rails of the ship, breaking three of his ribs, his collar bone, and crushing in his breast bone. He was conveyed to Ohristhurch hospital. The Press, July 25, says:—On Friday evening last a meteor was observed to fall in a paddock between Papanui and the Styx, on the North road. Tt was of a brilliant bluish color, and descended at an angle across the road, The persons who saw it, on arriving at the part of the road it had crossed, noticed the strong sulphurous fumes it left in its wake.
