Hawke's Bay Times. Nullius addictus jurare in verba magistri. FRIDAY, JULY 14, 1871.
Several civil cases came before the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning, A. shipment of gunpowder—some 15 kegs—consigned to the General Government Agent, Napier, arrived here lasc night by the Lord Ashley from Auckland. The Hawke's Bay portion of the English Mail via Suea may be expected to arrive here about Wednesday next, by the Bangatira from Wellington. Chief Justice Arney was a passsenger by the Lord Ashley from Auckland last night. He is on his way to Wellington to attend the sittings of the Court of Appeal in that city. The hon. the Native and Defence Minister leaves Napier this evening, in the Lord Ashley for Wellington. We observe that a Rechabite Society is being formed at Nelson. The Havelock Express now leaves Napier at half-past 3 o'clock every afternoon, instead of 3, as formerly. By the Lord Ashley from Auckland we have received the first numbers of the new jflaily, ■* The Mqrning News." It is a creditable paper, and seems well supported; and if it is as independently conducted as the " E\ening News," in conjunction with which it is published, will no doubt prove a success. We have a striking instance of the enterprise of our new contemporary in connection with a lecture delivered by Mr Gillies, on ff Our system pf Government." The lecture was delivered at Grahamstown on the evening of Friday, July 7, and a full report, occupying upwards of seven solid columns, appeared in the " News " in Auckland the next morning
