AUCKLAND.

Thursday, July 6. A sudden fall in all mining stock took place yesterday, and towards evening there was a panic. Caledonian shares have declined to .£l5O, and Thames to £3O. The market is firmer to-day, and there are buyers at quoted prices. Small holders of scrip became alarmed consequent on the small quantity of specimens taken out this week from the Caledonian mine. The men have been employed securing the mine and sinking for a lower level. It is generally believed that the dividends will be small for the next few weeks, but that they will increase again. Shares in Tookey's company remain firm. Governor Bowen and the Earl of Belmore visit the Thames to-day in the Luna. The Earl will probably return to Sydney on Saturday by the steamer Hero. It is reported that Major Ropata has joined Te Kooti; the report is not believed. Muirhead," who was sentenced to death at the last criminal sessions of the Supreme Court, for the murder of his comrade Gilfillan, has been reprieved, his sentence being commuted to penal servitude for life. Arrived—Na iSTobo, from Fiji, and Frowning Beauty, from Newcastle. Sailed—Australind, for Newcastle, N.S.W. Commercial—Flour has advanced to £lB. Maize, 5s 3d. Oats, 3s 6d. 1 p.m.—The Caledonian Company have commenced crushing specimens; they have over two tons in hand.
