Fesierday, being the anniversary of her Majesty's birthday, was generally observed as a holiday. The Napier Volunteer Artillery and the Rifle Volunteers, with their bands, were paraded in Clive Square, and at 12 o'clock commemorated ihe event in the usual loyal manner. The total score made yesterday by the 12 Rifle Volunteers who are tiring against an equal number of an Auckland company' was 347—the distances being 400, 500, and 600 yards, 5 r,hots at each range. The weather was very unfavorable, a t'rewh breeze prevailing throughout the firing.
A light, are glad §bo observe, is now nightly exhibited at the Port for the guidance of vessels entering the -roadstead. Jt was lit for the #rst tjnie pn Tuesday night. The erection of gas works is being proceeded with in Port Chalmers, and it is expected that in a very short time the town will be lighted with gas.
