DUNEDIN.
Thursday, May 25. The Provincial Council met- for the despatch of business to-day. The Superintendent congratulated the House on the progress of the Province, and stated that it would he much greater if it was distinct from the rest of the Colony and left to its own resources While advocating great retrenchment, the Superintendent thinks it will be incomplete unless the General Government reduces the number of its civil sen ants by amalgamation of offices. Campbell's store at the Kakanui Las been totally destroyed by fire —damage, £I,OOO. The tire is supposed to be an act of incendiarism. Mr Gillies has been elected Speaker of the Provincial Council. He was opr posed by Mr Reynolds, vho was supported by the Government.
