AUCKLAND LIVE STOCK MARKET. (Reports to May 5.) [MJ*SSRS. HUNTER AND NOLAN.] Houses : There has been no remarkable change in the market; a steady demand has existed for those of a good stamp, whether for draft or saddle. Tho number offered at auction was up to t'ie average. At the commencement of the sale there was some spirited competition, particularly for unreserved hordes ; but at the clo-o of the sale, horses, particularly of an inferior stamp, were difficult to place at prices looked for by vendors. We sold hacks from £6 to £9 15s j draught from £l2 to £ls for low-conditioned horses. Cattle: There has been considerable animation in the market; stores have been unequal to requirements, but purchasers are determined not to give an advanced rate, which indeed the present price of beef scarcely warrants. Dairy cows offered in limited numbers and of inferior description, and were consequently dull of sale. There was about the usual muster at Papakura, but the demand was iot quite so active as on the previous day. The m<irke,t has been fairly supplied with beef, and prices were fully sustained. The provincial cattle were scarcely prime enough* itnd ruled proportionally lower than

those ex St. Kiida, fVora Wanganui, which were vr-1! fatted. We quote beef from 22s to 26s ; dairy cows, from £3 15s to £lO 12s 6d. Sheep were penned in moderate numbers, with little alteration in value. Stores show a little improvement in prices and are" in good request, and more fat sheep could have been placed advantageously.. Pigs continue to be brought forward, and meet with ready sale at late rates.

[MR. ALJRED BUCKLA.ND.]

At the Haymarket on Saturday, the horse stock brought forward were of a better description than usual. There was a numerous attendance, and good prices ruled throughout. A pair of draught horses brought £34 each ; an unbroken filly, £2B ; light harness horses, from £lO 10s to £lB ; hacks, from £7 to £lO 10s. Fodder was scarcely so high as the previous week. At Papakura on Wednesday there was a large muster of stock —about 250 head, calves ai:d yearlings particularly. Wellbred heifers were freely competed for at late values, but other descriptions of cattle were almost unsaleable, and above 100 head were withdrawn from the auction.-—At Remuera on Thursday dairy cows were in moderate supply, and without alteration in values. One animal realised £l3 5s ; the remainder from £4 to £ll. Store cattle were in less than usual numbers, with a steady sale. Weaned calves brought from 22s to 35s ; yearlings, from £2 5s to £3 15s; two-year-olds, from £l to £5. Fat cattle were in full supply ; 95 head sold, and very, good qua'ity. Prices ruled from 18s to 23s the lOOlbs, with a dull sale. Fat sheep and lambs were in moderate supply only, and the prices attained advanced near halfpenny per lb. Ewes brought from 12s to 18s 6d ; lambs, 7s 6d to 13s each. Pigs were in full supply, and met with a steady sale at a slight advance each.
