Hawke's Bay Times. Nullius addictus jurare in verba magistri. SATURDAY, MARCH 25, 1871.
In view of the tax necessarily imposed upon the time of the Volunteer corps by the annual inspection which is appointed to take place during the \isit of Lieut.-Colonel Harrington to this place, we think that the additional inconvenience and loss of time invob ed in their parade for the formal reception of that officer and the Southern Volunteer representatives, should be avoided. Of course there are some belonging to the several corps to whom it may be no inconvenience at all, and perhaps many more who would willingly submit to it, such as it may be for the sake of the parade. On the other hand there are those to whom it will involve more than they can reasonably be expected to willingly undergo. To a formal reception on the part of those wishing for such, there can of course be no objection, and therefore we think that a voluntary attendance at that parade is all that should be required or expected from the men. It should not be forgotten that the attractions presented to outsiders to join the Volunteers, arid thus add to the numbers and efficiency of the corps, will always be in the inverse ratio to the sacrifices the men are called upon to make.
