Hawkes Bay Times. Nullius addictus jurare in verba magistri. SATURDAY, MARCH 18, 1871.

We believe that the fact of the recent elections taking place throughout the Colony in that portion of the year during which claims to registration as voters niay be made, will be found to have a marked influence upon the strength of the electoral rolls for the present year. It cannot be doubted that at every election there are to be found many who might have held a position as voters, but who, from neglecting to make the necessary application during the only time it can be received, are not upon the lists, and are consequently unable to exert their influence, who greatly regret their neglect and its consequences. Jt is but rational to conclude that many such will avail themselves of the opportunity of effecting their registration when it can be done at once, but who otherwise might sink into their customaryapathyaftertheelections are past. We have reason to believe that at the late election for these districts a considerable number of unregistered persons wished that tfyey had been able to vote, and we would say to all such— Do not let the few remaining days of the present month slip away without making the necessary claim. The old objection about giving offence to friends or patrons by the way a vote might be given, which formerly existed, exists no longer. Under the ballot every man can freely exercise his privilege, and risk offence to none. In this we have another reason to look for a large increase in the number of voters placed upon the electoral rolls of the present year, A copy of the form required by the Registration Act, "lor making application to be placed on the electoral rolls, will be found in our advertising co-r lumns. In the absence of a printed form, that can be copied on a sheet of paper and filled in according to the di? rections appended. Six. months' residence in any tenement will be sufficient for the household qualification, and the signature of any already qualified elector is all that is required as witness to the claim. After the end of the curtent month no more claims can be re ceived until the beginning of next year.
