" History telleth not,'' says the veracious "D. T." "wheie our contemporary " the Hawke's Bay Times " obtains its English telegrams—neither .doth our contemporary." If any of the public have imagined from this pro found remark that our English summary is obtained in some abnormal manner, we can reassure them. Our summary is forwarded by Greville's agents by the telegraph, and paid for in the regular way.
Oua evening contemporary in its last issue assails the Telegraph department at the Spit with renewed virulence. Certainly, the facts are not in its favor —so much the worse for the feet*. It •" reiterates its statement," based upon " general observations and inquiries," —and worthless accordingly. We are .accused of contradicting ourselves in speaking of the limited experience of the newly-appointed cadet, having some time since described him as a " skilled assistant." Previously to his appointment, the telegraphist at the Spit was assisted by the lineman, who acted as messenger, &c, and who has since been removed to the Napier office. The newly-appointed cadets, therefore (more especially in comparison with linemen or messengers) .are ' : skilled assistants." The charge against ourselves is thus groundless; the remainder ot the article requires no comment the evident animus by which it is pervaded is its sufficient refutation.
