Hawke's Bay Times. Nullius addictus jurare in verba magistri. SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 18, 1871.
The repudiation by Mr Webb of the contract entered into between bis agent and Mr Vogel, much as it is to be regretted, is by no means unexpected. An influential section of the Colonial press foresaw that such would be the case from the very first. Mr Vogel himself could scarcely have believed that the large mail steamers, after an extended voyage from Honolulu, and being too lightly laden for the purpose, would be taken down the coast of these islands, and subjected to all the risks and dangers consequent thereon, when the same service could be more efficiently performed by steamers of a smaller class. The fact, however, of the contract being made served the purpose of the Colonial Treasurer in securing popularity at Canterbury and Otago for the rime, and also formed the excuse for the appointment of a coasting pilot at £6OO per annum. We much fear that the collapse of this contract is but an example of the fate awaiting the other brilliant and popular schemes of the Colonial Treasurer.
