The Southern Cross, under date Jan. 30, says :—An accident of a very serious nature occurred to an elderly woman named Mrs McEwen, residing in Nelson street, on Saturday last. Her son keeps a number of cows, and it appears that about seven o'clock she had been in the cow house, milking the cows. The cow she was last engaged at was a young one which her son has had about four months. As Mrs McEwen finished the milking, she took the pin out of the " bail" in which the cow's head was fastened. No sooner was the cow liberated than she attacked Mrs McEwen with her horns, knocking her over and goring her on the lower part of the breast. A daughter and daughter-in-law came to her assistance upon hearing a scream, and conveyed her to the house. Dr Hooper was at once sent for. Although they are serious, he is of opinion that there is no serious internal injury, and believes that Mrs McEwen will shortly recover unless inflammation should unfortunately supervene. The cow was again fastened up, and we understand that her viciousness is likely to cost her her life —a butcher having been sent for, to effect a purchase.

A mother, who had with her a little daughter, was examining the figure of a horse on a tombstone, and wondering of what it was an emblem. There was nothing to explain it in the inscription. " Mamma," said the little one, as they moved away, " I shouldn't wonder if she died of the nightmare/'
