AUCKLAND.
Tuesday, Feb. 7. The election for the district of City "West came off to-day, and much interest was taken in the proceedings. The result of the polling is as follows : Gillies, superintendent, 510 ; Williamson, 508; Dignan, 200. The Thames election takes place on Thursday. Swan is the favorite.
Authentic information was received last Saturday that Tapihana's party in Pirongia has been twice reinforced, and numbers now about forty men. The women warned to sleep in the Harapipi blockhouse, as the natives are reported to be near there, having been seen on the ranges by several people yesterday. Mr Commissioner Branigan is suffering severely from the effects of sunstroke.
