Efforts are being made to form a Rifle Volunteer Company at Kaiwarra (Wellington.) A slight shook of earthquake was felt in Wellington at 20 minutes to 8 o'clock last Sunday night. Captain Matthews, of the brig Gazelle, died suddenly at the Commercial Hotel, Wellington, on the night of the 17th inst. According to medical testimony, death was caused by severe diarrhoea, possibly of dysenteric nature. An inquest having been held on the body, the jury returned a verdict of died from natural causes. The Southern Cross, Dec. 17, says: —-By the arrival of the schooner Sunbeam, from Whangaroa yesterday, we learn that on Monday last a number of natives, 14 in all, left Wangaroa (which place they had been visiting), with the intention of returning to their homes at the North Cape. When some three or four miles outside the heads, the boat capsized, and before assistance could reach them they were all drowned. At the time of the accideut a strong wind was . blowing, and a very heavy sea running.
