Resident Oou»t.—This morning Alexander Burford, a seaman on board the Flirt, was charged by Captain with refusing tq do duty, and with using abusive language; Mr Stedman appeared in support of the plaint; Mr Lee for the defence. Complainant deposed that defendant, who tad been drinking on Sunday night, refused to go to worl*: yesterday morn jng until he had had more drink; that he to Trask's and got it, returning in a few minutes unfit, for his work. ()n being remonstrated with, he became abusive, and used threatening language, sqy which he wss dischargee} by the captain. This case occupied a great 4eal of time, and was at length adjourned to this afternoon, in order that further pvideuce might be obtained for the de fence.—At the close of this case a crossftcticin was to be heard, Burford suing tfee captain for wages.

We understand tbat tbe memorial adopted at the recent public meeting, shewing the desirability of Napier be* ing made a port of call for the new line of mail steamers, has now over 500 signatures. Its is intended to forward it to Wellington by the s.s. Rangatira, which will leave this port on or about Thursday nexi j and it -will be advisable for all who have not yet signed it, and who wish to do so, to call at Mr. Sutton's store, where the memorial now lies for that purpose.
