DUNEDIN.
JFriday, Dec. %. In the Council to-night Mr Clarke is to move a reply to the Superintendent's Message 180. 3. It is couched iij. veryinsulting language, and attributes to his Honor many jafctempts to over-ride the Constitution, and a desire to check the free action of tlje Council. If the reply is carried, a crisis is likely to occur. At a public meeting held at Port Chalmers on Wednesday, a resolution was carried approving of the General Government scheme and condemnatory of the action of the Provincial Council and Government. Mr Vogel's new mail contract is very favorably spoken of throughput the Province, and it is rumoured that a demonstration in its support is likely to take place. The Daily Times opposes Port Chalmers being the terminus of the new line, and says that Sydney has the best claim.
Mr M>Grillivray lias been asked to stand for Riyerton in the General Assembly ; and a similar request has been sent to Mr Tolmie for Cantrell (?) At Oaversham a further public trial of ohe road steamer recently imported has been highly successful; and a comr pany is being formed for the employment of these locomotives in the country passenger traffic.
