Tuesday, Nov. 15. An inquiry into the cause of the late fire at L>yt telton was held yesterday, when a verdict was returned to the effect that the fire broke out in the store room of the Queen's Hotel, Lyttelton, but how it originated there is no evidence to show. Wheat is quoted at from 3s to 3s 3d ; barley unchanged; oat*, 2s 6d; butter, good supply at 7 : }d; cheese, 6Jd to 6£d ; hams and bacon, assorted parrange from 7d to 7f d.

TtrESDAY, Nov. 15. The charge of embezzlement against Mr Maddock, solicitor, has been withdrawn, and the prosecutor, Mr Gleeson, stands charged with malicious prosecution. The Provincial Council has been opened The Attorney-General states that the amended ordinance giving twenty years' guarantee to the projected Clutha railway, in compliance with the. offer made by Captain Cootes to the Provincial Government, is ultra vires, and therefore disallowed.
At Iverson's. Reef, Conroy's Gully, a rich leader lias been struct, which, it is believed, will give a yield of ten ounces to the ton.
