Mr Batchelor, the well-known Nelson seri eulturalist, ia now on a visit, to Weli >ut >n. and ha* had several interviews with the members of the Government in regard to the best means of promoting the culture of the mulberry and the growth of siik in this Colony. Mr Batchelor lias lor years past labored most earnestly to establish this new industry, and achieved a large measure of sucoesp. The committee on (Jolodal industries last session alluded to his efforts in highly complimentary terms and recommended that a certain amount of pecuniary assistance should be afforded him in prosecuting them. The members of the Grovermnent have, we believe,' shown every desire to give effect to the recommendations of the committe in this instance and do nil in their power to assist Mr Batchelor. We believe Mr Batchelor lias been asked to report on the suitability of Wellington for the culture of the mulberry and that he considers the climate and soil well suited to the cultivation of some of the hardiest and most profitable species of that tree. —Evening t*ost.
