Tuesday, Not I. Mr. Yoqel hold a meeting of the electois of Citv East last night.. He gaye an address 'to tfye constituency, and received a deputation from the Thames respecting water works. During the discussion which intervened he ascribed the depression existing at the Thames to the absence of public works. Tlje Thames representatives will take measures in the Provincial Council to pass an address requesting the General Government to expend a portion of the sum appropriated for the gold fields water works in the Thames district. Mr Vogel has visited the Thames, and received a deputation and an address from a public meeting, at which a resolution was parsed approving of the Government policy. At the opening of the Pro\ incial Council the Superintendent, in his speech, complained that the General Government opposed measures calculated to benefit the Province. The Daily Southern Cross replied in a leading article three columns in length, condemning the speech as disingenuo is. A debate has taken place in the Provincial Council on the question of the Busby compensation claim*. The Council condemns the action taken by the Superintendent in extinguishing those claim:* by money compensation. The Provincial Secretary intimated that it would be made a Government question. The debate will be resumed to* day. and it is probable will result in the defeat of the Government. The news of the great fire in Lyttelton has caused great excitement here. The Bank of New Zealand has declared a half-yearly dividend of 10 per cent., and a bonus of 5s per share. The ship Asterope has arrived from London; also, Strathnaver, from Hiyttejton, and the banshee. The Hero and the Constance have sailed for Sydney. Southern wheat is quoted at 5s 6d \ oats, 3> 4d ; flour, £H 10s; barley, 3s.
