Hawke's Bay Times. Nullius addictus jurare in verba magistri. TUESDAY, OCTOBER 11, 1870.
By a proclamation issued on the 6th instant, Parliament has been farther prorogued till the 10th November. The European and American Mails via San Francisco were, by contract time, due in Auckland yesterday. Independent Order of Rechabitec. —A special meeting is advertised to take place this evening at the usual place and hour. The Glassblowers entertainment last evening was well attended, and as interesting as ever. In addition to the ordinary prizes, a special prize,—a splendid case, containing some firstclass specimens of glass-work, valued at <£3o, was disposed of by lottery. No little interest was felt as to which of the audience would be the lucky winner. This prize, which was put up last of all, fell to the lot of a little boy named Charles Simon. There will be no performance to-night, but the farewell entertainment will take place to-mor-row, when each person present will receive a prize, and the steam engine will be taken to pieces before the audience. Performances will be given at Waipawa, the first to take place on Saturday evening, October 15. In the Resident Magistrates Court this morning the civil case of Hogg v, Focett, a claim of £lO for wages was lieai-d. Mr Lee appeared for the defendant. Plain tiff had been employed by defendant at a weekly rate of payment to convey certain property to Tapuaeharuru for a Mr Woodruffe, who was to accompany him. Plaintiff having gone on to Maketu, some 80 miles further, besides losing some of the horses, defendant refused to pay for the additional time which had been thus occupied. The plaintiff said he had been instructed by Focett to take his orders from Woodruffe, and that it was by directions from the latte/’ that he had gone to Maketu. The delay and unnecessary expense complained of had been caused by bad weather.—The case was not decided when our reporter left the court. In the Resident Magistrate’s Court this morning the following police bnsi ness was disposed of. One inebriate was mulcted in the usual amount, and another, who seemed to be suffering from incipient delirium tremens , was remanded for medical examination. — Mary Langan was charged with using insulting and threatening language to Joseph Flynn and Bridget Flynn. This appeared to be a mere neighbour’s squabble, but as the defendant was proved to have used very violant expressions, his Worship considered the charge established. The case was remanded to Friday.—George Hammond was charged with a breach of the Police Act in remaining at such a distance from his vehicle on Saturday last as not to have command of the same, His Worship said that it was very necessary to enforce the law in this particular, as the lives of children and others weie often endangered through neglected horses running away with their carts. As this did not seem to be an aggravated case, he would inflict the minimum fine —los, with costs, 145.- Thomas Bowden , a lad, was charged with having driven a mob of horses furiously along Miltonroad on Saturday last, to the danger of the lives and liinbs of foot passengers. There w r ere no bridles or ropes on the horses. Defendant said he was acting by the directions of his master, Mr Focett, Mr Focett said the lad had been acting against his instructions, having been repeatedly cautioned not to drive horses without ropes. The lad had since run away from his service,—Fined 10s ? and 8s costs,
