The schooner Herald, Capt. Gordon, left Auckland at 2 p.m. on the 10th inst., with light easterly wind, and armed at Merchry Bay at 2 p.m. on the 11th,. Loaded with timber, and left Mercury; jjay at 11 a.m. on the 15th. Had very light pasterly wind till about 8 p.m.; from that time till arrival here experienced E.S.E. and E.N.E. winds. Bounded the East Cape at 10 a.m. on the 18th, and Portland Island at 2 a.m. on the 19th, arriving here at 10 o'clock the same morning. The following vessel were sighted during the passage :-r-Qff the East Cape, on the 18th inst., a steamer, supposed to be the p.s. Samson, from Poverty Bay to Auckland; tp the southward of the East Cape, on the }Bth, the s.s. Lord Ashley, from Napier to Auckland ; and 15 miles eastward pf Ahuriri Bluff, on the morning of the 19th, the, schooner Queen, from Napier to Auckland. j We observe from the European Mail that the ship Asterope is loading at London for Napier and Auckland. We presume she will visit the latter port first, and come on tp this port to load wool for the home market. The echoqner Tawera, from Poverty Bay, arrived at Auckland on the 9th inst. The Southern Cross, 10th inst., says :—" The ketch Eagle, Papt. Loverock, arrived in harbor yesterday from llorotonga, bringing a cargo of fruit. Capt. Loverock reports having made the passage from Hawke's Bay to llorotonga in 13 flays. She left again on August 20, and experienced light winds for the first ten days ; then strong N.E. and E. winds till arrival. 4 ' A Sydney telegram in the Argus states that Captain Beale, late of the s.s. Wonga Wonga, has pbtained a verdict of £2OO damages against Mr Hall, the contractor for the Californian mail service, for wrongful dismissal.
