Hawake's Bay Times. Nullius addictus jurare in verba magistri. MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 1870.
Much of our space this morning is occupied by the important items of news from Europe,—news which, on its first receipt in the Colony, gave a severe shock to the whole social fabric; and, indeed, it would be difficult to over-estimate its importance. Late telegrams via California have, however, to a small extent tended to reassure the public mind, as it tells us of a partial recovery both in the money market and in the price of wool, owing, we believe to a feeling that, modern warfare must of necessity bring about a speedy issue. It is useless to speculate on the possible or probable result of the great struggle now in existence; nor, indeed, have we space for such indul gence were we so inclined, preferring to lay before our readers as much as possible of the news to hand. We can only hope that the present convulsion may be brief continuance, and that the next news may be of the restoration of a more peaceful and orderly state of affairs.
