The Seventy-mile Bush.—A Parliamentary paper .states that the whole of the land .situated between Hawke's Bay and Wairarapa, with the exception of a very small piece in the former province, has been sold by the natives to the Government. The estimated area is 400,000 acres, and the price to be paid is .£B,OOO. The Weather during the past few days has been very wet, cold, and miserable. We have, however, no reason to complain, for the winter, so far, has been singularly mild, and a little rain at the present time will not, we imagine, be regretted by either town or country residents. The Bar at Port Ahuriri is, we regret to say, in a very bad state — worse, in fact, than it has been for many years. Doubtless the prevalence of southerly weather will partly, if not wholly, account for this. A Mail via San .Francisco will be made up and despatched per s,s. Taranaki when that vessel leaves here fo«- Wellington, whenever that may be. As we before stated, the San Francisco mail leaves Wellington on the 3rd, and Auckland on the 7th August. A supplementary mail will be despatched from this port by the first direct steamer to Auckland.

In the Wellington Independent of Thursday last appears a Napier telegram, stating that at a large public meeting on Tuesday evening certain resolutions (appended) Mere carried unanimously. On examination we find the third of these to be one which was never passed at all, having been shelved on Monday, and another carried in its place (though not unanimously) on Tuesday. The important meeting of Monday is quite ignored! However, this «raove" was not successful, as two days previously the Evening Post published a telegraphic summary of the first meeting, with resolutions and amendments in full; and on Wednesday contained a similar summary of Tuesday's meeting, embodying the alteration male in the resolution formerly rejected '

The Commissioners, Messrs; Bell and Featherston, were, it is stated, to leave England for this Colony during the present month.

The Gourlay Family arrived in this town, per s.s. Lord Ashley, from Auckland, on Monday last, and an nounee, through our advertising columns, that they will perform in the Oddfellows' Hall on the evenings ol Friday (to morrow) and Saturday next. We wish this celebrated family every success, for, to quote an Auckland contemporary, " their en tertainment is really a very charming one, is thoroughly original and highclass in its character, and is, indeed, of so truly- genuine and legitimate a nature that it cannot lail to be well supported wherever it may be produced." It will also be seen by advertisement that the Gourlays purpose visiting Havelock and Waipawa shortly. Fire. —We are sorry to have to record the destruction by tire, on the evening of Monday last, of the new stables in Hastings-street, belonging to Mr C. Palmer, together with a quantity of oats and hay. Our readers will remember that it is but a few months since Mr Palmer suffered from a .-similar misfortune. As on the former occasion, the extensive block of buildings immediately contiguous were in imminent danger, as was also the cottage inhabited by himself, which, indeed, was hardly saved from the flames. Mr Palmer was, we hear, insured to the extent of £BO, but that will cover but a very small proportion of his loss. No clue whatever as to the origin of the lire appears to exist. '
