Foa Auckland—Comerang, p.s„ this morning at 10 o'clock; Airedale, s.s., early 1 Waiuoa Hero, schooner, early The s.s. Star of the South, Capt. Bendall, with a general cargo from Auckland, arrived in port at an early hour on Monday Inst, as briefly intimated in onr issue of that morning. She left Auckland on Friday, the 13th inst., at 11 p.m. Experienced \ fresh N.E. winds and heavy swell across the Buy: of Plenty. Bounded the East Cape at 11 p.m. ou Saturday. Prom thence to Portland Island had the wind still from N.E., with thick weather. Passed through Portland Island passage at noon on Sunday, and anchored at Mahia Bluff at 1.30 p.m. the same day ; landed 13 Bay of Islands natives who are on a visit to Mahia; also, 13 tons of oil casks for Mr G. Walker. Left Mahia at 11 p.m. the same day, and proceeded under easy steam towards Port Ahuriri, arriving here at daylight on Monday, entering the Iron Pot at 6.30 a.m., and was moored to the new Government wharf. Owing to an unusual rush of tide out of the Iron Pot, at about half-ebb the steamer parted her moorings, and was carried with the current to the point beyond the flagstaff, dragging both anchors and 70 fathoms of cable. She remained on the point for about four hours, at times bumping heavily. On the flood tide making she floated oft, without, to all appearance, having sustained any damage, and not making any water. At the time the Star broke adrift Capt. Bendall had g'ine ashore for the purpose of eatering his ship fit the Customs, and part of the crew were on the wharf. They immediately put off in a boat, but had not time to reach the vessel before she was hard on the ground. Capt. Bendall reports having, on the passage down, sighted the schooner.Tawera, bound to Auckland from Poverty Bay, in the Bay of Plenty on Saturday ; also, the schooner Murewai, hence, bound to Poverty Bay, beating about off Portland Island. — The Star or the South steamed for Auckland at 11 a.m. yesterday, with 1,200 sheep. The C.Gr. s.s. St. Kilda, Captain Barnard, left Por,t Ahuriri at 8 a.m. on Monday, May 10, and arrived off Wairoa at 1« p.m.; landed stores, &c, and left again at 5 p.m., arriving here at 10 p.m. Experienced fine weather. Capt. Barnard reports that, when he left Wairoa, the bar was in a tolerably fair condition. —The St. Kilda, in charge of Captain Pox, steamed for Wairoa last evening at 9 o'clock, and may be expected to return to-day. The p.s. Comerang, Capt. Thomas Clirisp, left Napier on Tuesday morning, May 10, aud arrived at Tararua (Thames) at dusk on the evening of Thursday the 12th; landed a full cargo of cattle and sheep for Mr Banks, aud left for Auckland on the evening of the 13th, and arrived alongside Queen-street wharf at 11 p.m. Left again for Napier at }0.30 p.m. on Sunday, May 15! Met with strong easterly swell across the Bay of Plenty. Rounded the East Cape at 3 o'clock on Tuesday morning, arrived in Ahuriri roadstead at 5 o'clock yesterday morning, and entered the Iron Pot at 7 o'clock. Experienced fine weather throughout. The ketch Wild Duck, from Poverty Bay to Auckland, was the only vessel sighted during the downward trip.—The Comerang cleared at the Customs yesterday afternoon, for Auckland via the Thames, with 1,200 sheep and 8 cases preserved meat; and, as may be seen by advertisement, will leave this port at 10 o'clock this morning. We have heard it stated that the s.s. Taranaki may be expected here from Southern Ports in a day or two ; as also the s.s. Ahuriri and s.s. Airedale. The schooner Three Brothers resumed her Yoyage to Wairoa yesterday. The ketch Why Not sailed for Wairoa at 9 o'clock last night, with a general cargo. The schooner IJero is loading for Wairpa and will have quick despatch. The brig Maggie may be daily expected to arrive here from Newcastle, N.S.W. The s.s. Claud Hamilton, from Melbourne, arrived at the Bluff at 10.30 a.m. on the 15th inst. The s.s. Tararua left the Bluff for Melbourne at 11.22 a.m. on the 17th inst. The fine powerful s.s. Wonga Wonga, Captain Beal, arrived at Auckland on the 9th inst., from Honolulu, which piace she left ou the 22nd April. She brought a cargo of sugar and 2 passengers. The iron harque Ismay, Capt. Sherwin, arrived at Auckland on the afternoon of Saturday last, 14th May, after a protracted passage of 142 days from Liverpool. She was the bearer of a full cargo of machinery and general merchandise. The C.S. Co.'s s.s. Airedale, Capt. Kennedy, from Squthera Ports, arrived at the Manukau on the morning of the 14th inst. She was to leave again for the South on Wednesday (yesterday.) The Auckland Evening Star, May 14, contains the following paragraph : " The Colonial Government p.s. Sturt, Capt. Eox, arrived in the Manukau this morning from Auckland, Captain Fox reports the total loss of the schooner Challenger at the- Manukau Heads, This vessel left
Unehunga on Thursday evening last, 12th instant, in charge of Captain Hqbbs, with a cargo of timber, and it is supposed she has drifted ashore during the night. When the Start came in the schooner was lying close under the cliffs, and no persons were seen about the wreck. It is to be hoped the crew have been saved. The vessel was the property .of Messrs.. Belcher and Pairweather, ofKaiapoi, and was insured. The cargo is not insured." The p.s. Charles Edward, which vessej had been missing for some time, lias turned up safely at Nelson. She was hound to Greymouth from Westport, and her engines breaking down, she was blown pff the land, A Sydney telegram, Ist May, says :—The ship Walter Hood, from London, has been totally wrecked at Ulladulla, 130 miles south of Sydney. The commander and thirteen others were drowned. The brig Spray, schooner Nation, and ketch Dauntless were also wrecked. A London telegram, of date 4th April, says : The barque Mary Johnston, from Bakin, Brazil, reports that on the 13th February, in lat. 50deg. N., long. 24deg. W., she passed a large steamer which was heading N.E., displaying British colors, and a signal to denote that her machinery was broken down. It is thought she may have been the missing City of Boston, The gale was very heavy, and the captain of the Mary Johnston was unable to stop or get near enough to make any other observation.
