The Hawke's Bay Times. Nullius addictus in jurare verba magistri. MONDAY, APRIL 18, 1870.
We observe that later and fuller in telligence respecting the late sortie upon the rebel position, by the forces under Kemp and Ropata, somewhat detracts from the importance of the same as compared with the tele graphic account of a fortnight since. The three hundred prisoners taken from Kooti, it appears, includes not only women and children, but also (as we expected) many of those but recently taken by him in his late raid on Opepe. So far, the loss to him is of a somewhat dubious character. His actual loss of men is comprised in the twenty killed during the attempt to escape, and the thirty-one prisoners conveyed to Wellington in the s.s. Star of the South. His desertion by the Uriweras, if it sho.dd prove true, will be a more severe blow to him than the loss of these fifty-one men, as it that which leaves him in the state of desperation described as haying but som% eighteen followers, who themselves talk of giving him up. So far as the Wanganuis are concerned, the campaign is over, as the Star of the South has taken them to Wellington on their way home, llopata, it is said, is about to organise another expedition at once, being confident of his ability to thoroughly complete the extirpation of the rebel band; and this we think he .should find little difficulty in doing if the condition of Te Kooti be anything like so desperate as it is described.
