Hawkes Bay Times. Nullius addictus in jurare verba magistri. THURSDAY, APRIL 7, 1870.

If the news from the Front which we publish in another column be correct, it may reasonably be expected that the capture of Te Kooti and the destruction of his band is close at hand. In fact the latter must already be regarded as almost accomplished, for it has not, that we are aware of, been estimated that the number of his followers has of late exceeded that given as killed and taken prisoners by Ropata. Te Kooti must now then be either quite alone, or at the most with a mere handful of followers, while the force under Ropata is numerous and flushed with their recent successes. We sincerely trust that it may be so, but we have so often lately heard of his almost certain capture by the various bodies of friendly natives who ha\ e been engaged in the chase, that we must not be hasty in forming a judgment, but wait until further news be received. His numer our escapes at times when his principal men and the bulk of his followers are destroyed or captured, are certainly most extraordinary. Ropata, we hear, is determined to earn the £SOOO offered by the Government for the capture of Kooti, and to this end has split his force up into small parties, any of which will, it is supposed, be strong enough to take him in his present weakened condition should they be fortunate enough to find bim.

Flax Machines continue to be imported into the Province. The Star of the South brought down two on her last trip from Auckland. The Home Commissioners —Dr. Featherston and the hon. F. D. Bell —are reported in the European Mail as having arrived at Marseilles on the 22nd January. Township of Gisborne. — We would remind all who are interested in the matter that the sale of the Township of Gisborne, Poverty Bay, will take place at the Grown Lands Office, Napier, on Wednesday next,, 13th April. Postal. —The following rates of postage are now in force, having taken efftct on the Ist of April :

The Leotabd Troupe.—Those talented acrobats, F. and E. Leotard, gave one more exhibition of their skill in the gymnastic art on the evening of Tuesday last, in the Oddfellows' Hall, which they were enabled to do in consequence of the detention of the Auckland steamer. The entertainment, being to some extent unexpected, was not quite so well attended as it might otherwise have been, vet towards the close the Hall was well filled. Mr Haviy Morgan gave several of his comic and motto songs, which were, as usual, well received. The enlivening strains of the Napier Brass Band, which was in attendance, added much to the enjoyment of the evening. We omitted to mention that on Monday night a performance took place for the benefit of the Hall. Last evening, the members of this talented company left for Auckland in the s.s. Star of the South, We trust that wherever they may in future appear as caterers for the public amusement the}' will be well received and supported, for they certainly deserve the patronage of the public.

Divine Service, it will be seen by advertisement, will (D.V.) be conducted by the Bishop of Waiapu next Lord's Day at 6.30 p.m. in the Port School. This is a step in the right direction, and our readers will be glad to learn that it is proposed to conduct Divine Service in the same building every Sabbath evening. The English Mail via Suez.— As the next outgoing mail via Suez leaves Melbourne on the 24th inst., and the parage from Wellington occupies about 6 day?, it is probable that the return of the s.s. Wellington from Auckland will be the only opportunity the Hawke's Bay public will have for their mail.
