Hawke's Bay Times. Nullius addictus jurare in verba magistri. THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 17, 1870.
To morrow, at noon, Stuart & Co. will hold an auction aale of oats, maize, cheese, candles, <fcc. Dr. Hitchings, we regret to state, met with a serious accident on Saturday evening last. He was entering his stable in the dark, and over a rope, fell and broke his leg. Napier Rifle Club.—The Challenge Cup for 1870 was won on Monday by Mr H. Renouf, who scored 27 points. The weather being unfavorable, the shooting was below the average. Napier Rifle Volunteers.—At the monthly inspection of this corps on Monday morning last, Private Renouf was presented by Major Withers with a beautiful opera glasc, the gift of Captain Robinson to the best, shot at the preliminary firing. Sad Occurrence at Petane.— On Monday evening, the 15th inst, a messenger arrived from Petane with the intelligence that Mr Alexander Aiken, a settler in that district had committed suicide by shooting himself. An inquest was held on the following dav, before H. S. Tiffen, Esq., J.P. From the evidence which may be found in another column it appears that deceased had been for some time ailing, and in very low spirits, but no one had any ground for suspicion that he would make an attempt opon his own life. The jury found that the deceased was suffering from temporary insanity at the time of the occurrence.' The funeral took place almost immediately after the inquest. This melancholy event has given a great shock to the communitv.
