Commercial Intelligence. THE LONDON WOOL MARKET.

London, November 5. It has been resolved by the Committee of the New South "Wales and Van Dieman's Land Commercial Association that, in 1870, there shall be five Series of sales, instead of four; the dates appointed for the commencement of each being, Thursdays, February 10, April 7, June 10, September 8, and No vember 17; subject only to any unforeseen circumstance arising which may render a change necessary, in which case fourteen days' notice will be given. For the salts next ensuing, aud which commence on Thursday, lltli November, the following are the new arrivals (up to the 4th November) :—Sydney, 27,551 bales; Port Phillip, 7,898 bales; Van Diemen's Land, 688 bales; Adelaide, 3,049 bales; New Zealand, 5,274 bales; Swan River, 10 bales; and Cape, 40,430 bales ; making a total of 85,000 bales. These figures are given on the authority of Mr Helmuth Schwartze. Some other of our friends give the quantity as from 82,090 to 84,000, but all agree in estimating the quantity to be offered as about 120,000 bales. Messrs Willans, Overbury & Co. remark upon the state of the wool trade :—Since the plose of the September sales, prices for all kinds of Colonial wool have been very firm, with an upward tendency on those descriptions for which there has been an inquiry. Transactions have taken place to a fair amount, and in most cases an advance of to Id per tb, has been obtained. The demand has been chiefly from France, whence the accounts generally are better than they have been for some time past; and as there is a concurrent improvement in the value of River Plate wools, both at Antwerp and Havre, it may be presumed that consumption is increasing. Trade in this country is tolerably goo,d, but as yet no marked improvement can be reported. Messrs Squthey, Balme & Co. agree in stating that consumption in the home districts during the last few weeks lias been fairly steady, while from the continent the latest advices report ?i

rather more active condition of trade. Under these circumstances, we Look-Cor firm quotations at the approaching sales. / Messrs Hazard & Caldecott say that with regard to the future it seems probable 1 that production has received a considerable check; should such be the ems, they think prices will not be lower. Mr Helmuth Schwartze reports a firm market. Rather more wool has (he affirms) been sold since the close of last series than is usual in these intervals. Manufacturers seem everywhere well employed, but are, it appears, generally compelled to work at barely remunerative rates. There is no want of orders if they accept the current low prices, but any attempt to obtain better terms is fruitless. Therefore, though a brisk demand exists for wool and an active consumption is going on, it seems doubtful whether there is much room for a rise in the article's value.

Messrs Jacomb, Sojs & C.Q. express their opinion as follows: —Since the close of the last public sales this market has been quiet, with a firm appearance. Accounts from the Yorkshire manufacturing districts have not been quite so good, perhaps, as those from the Continent and elsewhere; a few inquiries for Sydneys and Capes have resulted in a little business ; but, as usual between sales, the real transactions have not been in proportion to the demand talked of. About 12,000 bales of South American have been sold at Havre from October 26 to 30, at prices 5 to 10 per cent, higher than their previous rates j 25,000 bales more, including a few Capes, are advertised for sale at Havre.
