The ketch Enterprise, Siddons, master, left Poverty Bay at noon ,on Saturday, Ist Jan. Experienced fresh N.E. wind as far as Portland Island, which was rounded at midnight. About that time the wind suddenly chopped round to S.W., blowing hard, and accompanied with heavy rain ; in consequence, bore up for Mahia for shelter, where she remained until 2 p.m. on the 2nd, when, a north-easterly breeze springing up, she procceeded on the passage ; at midnight, the wind changed to; N.W., and at 5 a.m. on the 3rd (Monday last), was off Ahuriri Bluff; stood off and on until 8 a.m., when she entered the Iron Pot. Cargo : 24; bags grass seed, 50 cases apples, Kinross and Co.; 100 bng§ grass seed, Watt Bros, (agents.) The N.Z.S.N. Co.'s s.s. Wellington, Captain Holmes, with the Hawke's Bay portion of the European November mail on board, left Port Chalmers at 1.50 p.m. on Thursday, December Dec. 30; arrived at Lyttelton at 9 a.m. on the 31st; left Lyttelton at 10 p.m. the same day ; arrived at Wellington at 2.15 p.m. on the Ist January ; left Wellington at 6 p.m. on the 3rd, and brought up in the Ahuriri roadstead at 5.30 p.m. on Tuesday, 4th inst. Prom Port Chalmers to Lyttelton had light winds with fine weather and smooth water. On leaving Lyttelton experienced strong S.W. wind and heavy sea, and strong S.E, gale with heavy sea crossing Cook's Straits; at 11 a.m. on the Ist inst. slowed the engiues and hove the ship to till 1 p.m., when, the weather clearing up a ljttle, ran into Wellington. Prom Wellington to Hawke's Bay light winds and line weather were experienced. The Wellington brought up a large" general cargo and severai passengers from Southern Ports; and steamed for Auckland at 5 p.m. yesterday, with 110 bales wool and 5 casks preserved meat; also, several passengers. We understand that the Wellington may be expected to return from Auckland about Wednesday next 12th inst., and will have quick despatch for Wellington and Southern Ports. The loading of the barque R. T. Turnbull has been proceeding rapidly during the last few days. Yesterday afternoon she had on board 716 bales of wool. The schooner Hero, Merwin, master, sailed for Tongcio on Sunday night last, and returned to Napier on Tuesday afternoon, with 19 bales and 2 bags wool. She will sail for Tongoio again today for another cargo of wool. Owing to cargo coming in very slowly, the schooner Three Brothers will not get away for Wairoa so soon as expected. It will be seen by advertisement that she is now announced to leave on Monday next, 10th inst. The ketch Enterprise is on the berth for Poverty Bay, but it is uncertain when she will be able to get away. The brig Maggie, from Newcastle, brought up in the roadstead at a late hour last night. The brigantine Mary Ann, from Newcastle, arrived in the roadstead early this morning. The s.s. Star of the South, from Auckland, may be hourly expected to arrive. It may not be generally known that by the 21st clause of the new Harbor Regulations of New Zealand, all vessels in distress, and whaling vessels putting into any port in the Colony through stress of weather, or for water, or for provisions, or for refit, are exempt from all port dues, and are free from pilotage except where the services of a pilot are actually made use of. The s.s. Lady Bird is still lying idle in Wellington harbor, but " the timbrel has sounded," and it is expected that she will soon be under hands for active work. We learn from our Wellington files that the engines of the p.s. Cleopatra, wrecked near the White Rock early in 1868, whilst on her passage from Napier to Wellington, have beeu diserabedded and taken to Wellington. The boiler has also been recovered and sent to Nelson. The whole property is valued at £IOOO. It is matter of surprise that no efforts have been made to recover the property on board the s.s. White Swan, wrecked on the same coast some years ago.
