In a leading article in the West Times of the 20th ulf , we find this sentence:—"When valuable properties like Deptford Dockyard are thrown away—when Sheerness, with all its traditional glories is given up, and economy condescends to recutting quill pens in the pubiic offices, and in the flying squadron cutting the blue-jackets off even their rations of water, we can hardly be astonished at a mere money cost operating to induce our luiglish Government to risk the loss of our Colonies." Califoksia —The evil effects of overcropping the soil are beginning to be felt in California. The San Francisco Market Review, referring to this year's h-irvest eius :—ln regard to crop yield, there con tinues to be a great diversity of opinion. All new lands have produced fine crops, good yield and plump grain ; while the exact contrary has been the general result, upon old worn out lands. Where else but in California would farmers think of planting wheat for ten or fifteen consecutive years, without giving rest to the land, or changing the crop ? This, then, is the true cause of our failure to produce uniform good crops this season. Maukitifs.—A Melbourne paper publishes the gist of a prvate letter from Mauritius, to the effect that Sir Henry Earkly will leave the island at the end of the year. " During his regime the events that have occurred not been of sueh a kind as to favor the prosperity of the inhabitants. To c irry out needful reforms Sir Henry Ba;kly has felt it expedient to impose iresh taxes. In conquence of this some of the Mauritiens are rather clis pleased, and complain that the population is too heavily burden* d. It is certain that when Sir Henry Darkly leaves the Mauritius he will not, as he did here, leave nothing but regrets behind him." This, it seems, is the su stance of the communica£ion°
