For the second time within the present month we have to report that there have been neither arrivals nor departures since our last issue. The ketch Why Not, (an iron vessel, we are told, of about 40 tons register, recently purchased by Mr B. Warnes, of this port), may be shortly expected to arrive from Wellington. The brigantjne Esther cleared at the Customs yesterday witfra full general cargo for Blackhead, und will probably leave port to-day. The N.Z.S.N. Co.'s s.s. Wellington, Captain Holmes, may be looked for this forenoon, having left Wellington at 3.20 pm. yesterday. She will steam northwards shortly after arrival. The N.Z.S.N. Co.'s s.s. Rangatira, Capt. Renner, may be expected to arrive from Auckland on or about Saturday next, and will have quick despatch for Wellington and Southern Ports. The s.s. Star of the South, from Auckland, may be looked for to-morrow or the next day.

The schooner Hero, which yessel has been undergoing repairs at this port for some time past, will probably be launched to-day. The ship Chile, for Auckland and Napier, had not left London at our latest date (August 13.) One of the largest iron ships of war ever yet built has been laid down at Pembroke dock, and she is to have the name of the " Thunderer." Race between the Charles Edward and John Penn. —Messrs N. Edwards and Co.'s steamer Charles Edward arrived at the Albion Wharf on Saturday morning, after a most exciting run round the coast with the John Penn. The latter left Nelson on Monday afternoon at 4.30, and the Charles Edward the same evening at 7.30 ; the latter sighted the Penn at daybreak on Tuesday, and gradually diminished the distance between them until botli boats were together off the Buller, when the Penn dropped anchor, and the Charles Edward proceeded to Hokitika, where she arriyed at midnight. The Penn came in on the next morning's tide, and both boats left again that night at ten, the Charles Edward having four minutes start, and arriving at Greymouth a quarter-of-an hour sooner than the John Penn. They left again on Thursday evening, but, on account of the tide, they could not cross the Buller bar till 9.30 on Friday morning. Shortly after one o'clock the Penn cast off, almost immediately followed by the Charles, a neck-and-neck race ensuing for some minutes; but in spite of the most strenuous efforts, the pad-dle-boat took the lead, and arrived at Nelson two hours and a-half before her opponent. —Nelson Examiner, October 13.
