The Independent.—We have received several of the earliest numbers of a new Canterbury evening paper bearing the above title. Napjer Land and Building Society, No. I.—The third annual general meeting takes place this evening at 8 o'clock. Daily Communication between "Napier and Waipawa.—A. Peters and Co,, the spirited proprietors of Cobb and Co.'s coaches in this Province, announce that on and after Monday, Ist November, their coaches will leave both Napier and Waipawa every morning at 8 o'clock. Wairoa Election. —The nomination of candidates for the seat in the Provincial Council, for the Wairoa district, vacated in consequence of the resignation of Colonel Whitmore, takes place at the Court-house, Wairoa, thi* day at noon.

The Late Oapt. Sturt. —An excellent tribute to the memory of Captain Charles Sturt, the great-AiisT-ralian explorer, will be found, in today's paper. The article iu question is copied from the London Daily Telegraph, and will, we feel sure, be read with interest.

This 4 FTEJINOON > Napier Bras;* Baud, we have been requested to state, will (weather permitting), perfprm in Olive Square. We aUo hear that it is in contemplation to inaugurate a system of weekly performances during' the summer months. And here, we may be permitted to suggest an occasional visit, on the part of the Band, to Port Ahuriri. ' Such visits, we need hardly say, would be productive of very general satisfaction, and would serve to make this deservedly favorite local institution still more popular. We commend the matter to the I consideration of members.
