CAPTAIN COOK'S CENTENARY. To-morrow, .Friday, Boh Oct., will be the centenary anniversary of the landing of Captain Cook at Poverty Bay, and of his virtually taking possession of the Islands of New Zealand in the naine of the British Crown. It is a matter to be regretted that no steps have been taken by the Colony as a whole to the day celebrated in a manner, becoming the importance of the oc-j casion, public attention having been|
directed to the subject several times.; Hawke's Bay itself is perhaps more to blame than other parts of the Colony in the matter, as, being so near the de facto spot on which the ceremony of landing took place, it properly revolved on it to take a leading position in causing an observance of the day; but so far as we know no arrangements of a general eharactei have been made. We believe, however, that several public-spirited individuals intend that some sort of a demonstration shall be made, and we trust that their example will be so far followed as to make the day what it ought to be—
A GENERAL HOLIDAY.
